What's In a Name?
March 10, 2025
Today, we wanted to share some of the most basic terms for our crafts, along with their origins. Y’all will know most of these terms, but we’re giving you handy ways to describe what we do.
Using Yarn
Crochet: Making fabric by completing one stitch at a time with a single hook (often 6” long). The name comes from the French & German terms for “hook”.
Knitting: Making fabric via a row of loops using two knitting needles or machine. The name comes from German, Old Norse & Old English terms for knot or tie.
Tunisian Crochet: Making fabric via a row of loops using a single elongated hook (9”-36”); sometimes described as a mix of crocheting & knitting. The name appears to come from the name of the hook (“Tunisian”).
Using Thread
Embroidery: Decorating or mending fabric with needlework, from French, German & Middle English terms.
Cross Stitch: Decorating fabric with x-shaped stitches, which gives this technique its name.
Needlepoint: Decorating canvas with various stitches. Appears to originate from the Egyptian technique for sewing canvas tents.
Needlework: General term used when the specific stitching technique is unknown or when discussing a variety of techniques.
