Southpaw Stitchery!
It's hard being left-handed in a right-handed world! 10 percent of the population is left-handed, so we thought we'd share some learning resources for lefties.
Left-handed Knitting
Hooray! Knitting is a TWO-HANDED activity, with both hands having an equal part of the work. It isn't necessary to learn differently from right-handers. What IS helpful is to remember that you can hold the yarn in either hand. Many lefties find the Continental style easier to learn (it's sometimes even called "left-handed knitting"), but a lot of lefties knit English style as well.
If you're a left-handed person who knits "mirrored" (stitches move from the right needle to the left needle), we can still support you! Our Wendy knits backwards, forwards, and upside down, and has no problem working with any knitting style.
Leftie Crochet
Unlike knitting, crochet is definitely HANDED. There's one tool (the hook) that goes in your dominant hand. The non-dominant hand holds the yarn. But most crochet teachers and learn-to-crochet videos feature right-handed crochet.
Here are two sites with videos specifically tailored for left-handed crocheters:
The Moogly Blog has a whole video instruction course for teaching left-handed beginning crochet.
Knit & Crochet Ever After has over 500 crochet tutorials, and almost all of them have both left- and right-handed instructions.
And while left-handed crocheters can totally work from right-handed instructions, here are some patterns that are designed for left-handers:
