Featured Yarn & Pattern
Let's kick off the Holidays in July patterns with a pattern that might take all month - a tree skirt! The Fabulous Flurries Tree Skirt by Nadia Fuad is crocheted with worsted weight yarn, and features beautiful wintry motifs that we are sure will help you feel cooler while you're working on it! The pattern is $6.50 in-store or on Ravelry - or you can get it for free on the Yarnutopia blog. We recommend a basic worsted-weight yarn like Plymouth Encore, Berroco Vintage, or Cascade 220.

Here's a bonus tree skirt pattern for the knitters: the Jólaskjól by Védís Jónsdóttir for Ístex (no, we can't pronounce it, either), available in-store or on Ravelry for $6.50. This one will knit up beautifully in Lamb's Pride Bulky!

The Tip Jar

Today's tip can be used in almost every yarn/fiber craft: counting rows using waste yarn! Needlepointers and cross stitchers have used this forever, using scrap yarn/thread to mark their canvas or cloth before stitching.

Counting rows can be challenging, especially when the stitches of one row intermesh with the stitches of another. If you need to keep track of rows in a way that doesn't require clicking, writing or outside tools, this method is for you!

Grab a 6-10-inch-long piece of waste yarn in a contrasting color. Work a few rows of your project, then on the row you want to mark, work a few stitches, lay the waste yarn across the work from back to front, then continue stitching, letting the stitches hold the waste yarn in place. The next time you mark a row, lay the waste yarn across the other way (front to back), and keep repeating this as you work on your piece. When you need to count rows, you'll just count the "running stitches" that the scrap yarn makes.

This works for every craft that has rows, but we could only find tutorials for knit and crochet. Have a look:
