Disability Awareness at Yarnivore
Accessibility matters!

October is Disability Awareness Month. At Yarnivore, we want to make shopping for yarn and craft supplies as accessible as possible to our disabled customers. Many of our staff have disabilities and we understand how hard it can be.

Here are the things we're doing to support disabled customers:

We try to have aisles that are as wide as possible. All the main shelving units have enough space for wheelchairs and other mobility aids. There are some movable displays like mannequins and wheeled shelving that may get in your way, simply because we're trying to fit as much yarn as we can in our small space. All of our staff are more than happy to move things out of your way and to get things down for you! Our restroom is also wheelchair accessible.

We have added alt text to all images in our newsletter and we're working on updating images on our website to add alt text. We're more than happy to describe colors or provide large print versions of any of our shop printouts.

We have one staff member who can use a limited amount of sign language. We are also happy to communicate in writing, and always have something to write on. All our samples are tagged with the yarn and pattern name. If you tell us you're hearing impaired, we will do our best to speak up to make things easier for you.

We try to minimize excessive odors and provide a welcoming sensory environment and be sensitive to the needs of customers with allergies.

We understand that accessibility is not one-size-fits-all, so if you have accessibility needs that we haven't addressed, please let us know and we will do our best to make you feel welcome!

The Tip Jarclip art of a clear mason jar with three balls of yarn inside, one red, one green, one purple. The label on the jar reads Tip Jar

Don't stress your yarn out!

Did you know it's hard on your yarn to be wound too tight? Yarn that's wound really tightly stretches out, and it can affect your gauge! It can also cause the yarn to change even more than normal when it's washed. So - wind loosely and let your yarn stay unstressed!
