Christmas in July Starts Now!
Stitching on a deadline is super stressful, right? Avoid the stress by getting started now on making gifts that take longer, like blankets or sweaters. Many stitchers will remember this is why we celebrate (in our crafty way) Christmas in July. Did you know that an average adult sweater will require 1,100 yards or more of a worsted (#4) yarn, depending on the wearer's size? Blankets are even bigger: An adult sized throw takes about 2,500-3,000 yards of worsted weight yarn.
If it's July, then it's time to buy blanket yarns for your Christmas in July projects! "Blanket yarn" is an informal term for any soft, squishy yarn used for blankets - often the thicker, the better. For south Texas, this usually means worsted (#4) or bulky (#5) yarns and generally, machine washable (we recommend cold water, gentle). As always, be careful to follow the manufacturer's care recommendation on their label. They can be wool, wool-blends, acrylic, cotton or cotton-blends. Below are a few ideas for worsted weight yarns; check out our website for suggestions in bulky weight and for pattern ideas.
Berroco Vintage (52% Acrylic, 40% Wool, 8% Nylon), Cascade 220 Superwash Merino (100% superwash Merino Wool), Plymouth Encore (75% Acrylic/25% Wool), Queensland Coastal Cotton and Coastal Cotton Ocean Mist (both 100% Cotton), Sirdar Jewelspun (variegated, 100% Acrylic), Universal Uptown (100% Acrylic).

Choose your blanket yarn wisely! Make sure the skeins are from the same dye lot if at all possible (see question 5 on Craft Yarn Council website or this post on the Easy Crochet blog). Different dye lots will sometimes look very similar, but they can also look like different colors! If you’re mixing colors or working in motifs (e.g., granny squares), then dye lot may not matter as much. If you must use different dye lots, we can give you ideas on how to minimize any differences.
