Love the Yarn You're With! (with a nod to Stephen Stills!)

AKA You know, that yarn in your stash ...

Using up your stash reminds some of us (mostly Caryn) of that Asleep at the Wheel song, Dance With Who Brung You because it's about enjoying what (or who) you already have! Plus, working with scrap yarn makes for gorgeous projects!

Most of us can’t bear to let go of leftover yarn, even long after we’ve finished a project. These leftovers are perfect for stash-busting scrap projects, where you combine a variety of yarns, regardless of color, thickness or texture, into gorgeous projects. Using up your scrap stash also saves you money and declutters your stash a bit.

Some stitchers think of scrap projects as memory projects, because using scraps reminds them of the original project. This is especially true if the yarn was originally used for children’s items or gifts that have long since been given. Hold on to those precious memories!

The biggest influences for stash busting are your imagination and sense of adventure. You can stripe your scraps, fade them, double-triple-quadruple strand, work in mosaics, granny stitch, motifs and more. If you have a lot of scrap yarn in a particular color vibe (think jewel tones or pastels), you can focus on those, or you can mix colors randomly. We encourage you to use colors that seem like they don’t play well together; some of the coolest effects are the result of these unusual combinations.

If you’re looking for scrap yarn inspiration, we have some pattern ideas below. Each of these patterns are free Ravelry downloads, which means you’ll be saving your wallet by using scrap yarn and by using any of the following patterns! (Images show each of the listed patterns.)

Looking for scrap yarn projects inspiration? You can use many patterns for scrap yarn, they don’t have to be written for it. For example, patterns that are written for striping or mosaics will lend themselves to beautiful scrap projects. You can also stripe a pattern that is written for a single color.

However, if you want a pattern written specifically for scrap yarn, there are tons of free patterns online! You can find them by searching for projects that have “scrap” in their name on Ravelry or searching for “scrap yarn knit” or scrap yarn crochet” in your favorite browser.
