We Get By with a Little Help!

Resources for Stitchers!

Many stitchers are self-taught, meaning that they learned their skills on their own. After all, there are a ton of online resources to feed stitcher’s curiosity! One of the drawbacks, though, is knowing where to find reliable information. This week, we’re sharing a list of local and online stitching organizations that support our favorite crafts through education and networking. Both types are usually nonprofits that offer education but local resources are also a way to strengthen your relationships in the stitching community.

Local:

Online (National or Global):

  • American Needlepoint Guild (ANG) offers online workshops and several Master programs, including Needle Artist and Needlepointer. While the ANG has chapters across the US, the closest to San Antonio is in Austin. Annual Membership: $60
  • Craft Yarn Council (CYC): This organization is made up of yarn companies, tool manufacturers and publishers in the yarn world. Their website has tons of free information. Need to convert needle and hook sizes from metric to US? Need to figure out what size yarn you need to get gauge? Check out the Standards section of their website. The CYC also offers a Certified Instructors Program (CIP). No membership fees but the CIP costs about $85.
  • The Knitting Guild Association (TKGA): While there doesn’t appear to be a local chapter for this global organization, the TKGA has meetups at major yarn events and online programs for members. The TKGA offers various distance learning classes for fundamentals and the Master Hand Knitting Program (certification) in three levels. Annual membership: $35
  • The National Academy of Needlearts (NAN) is a national organization devoted to embroidery arts. They have a variety of educational resources as well as a certification program. Annual membership: $40.
Also, by popular request, this information is now posted on the Resources page of our website! If you know of a resource that we haven't listed, let us know.

Working in a yarn with a halo, like mohair? Many yarn manufacturers and designers often recommend a smaller needle or hook than the Yarnivore crew would use. Remember that smaller hooks or needles will make the fabric denser (aka thicker or stiffer). In the case of a mohair yarn, that could make it too dense and therefore too warm for us in south Texas. If you're using a pattern written for colder environments, try using a bigger size needle or hook. For example, we're working on our Crawl patterns and one of us started with a US 11 needle but ended up using a US 17 needle because of density concerns. The finished project ended up being lighter and fluffier! You can see for yourself next month, during the Best Little Yarn Crawl in Texas.
