Get Ready to Crawl, Y'all!

18th Annual The Best Little Yarn Crawl in Texas, October 11-20, 2024

It’s nearly time to Crawl, y’all! For those who haven’t experienced the fun, a yarn crawl (aka shop hop in some regions) is an event where customers (Crawlers) visit local yarn stores (LYS) in the area over a set period of time. The 18th annual The Best Little Yarn Crawl in Texas (aka the Hill Country yarn crawl or Crawl), occurs over 10 days, October 11-20. This year, there are eight stores within 85 miles of the Texas State Capitol building in Austin, including stores in Austin, Cottonwood Shores (near Marble Falls), Dripping Springs, La Grange, Seguin, and San Antonio.

Participating stores will discount a featured brand and give out two free patterns that use the featured brand’s yarn. They will also host trunk shows and give away daily prizes! Crawlers who visit all of the stores and turn in their completed passport are also eligible for grand prizes. Want more information about the stores' featured brands and patterns? Watch for any information on their social media. Find Yarnivore on Facebook and Instagram: @YarnivoreSA.

We have a few tips for the 18th Annual Best Little Yarn Crawl in Texas:

  • Purchase your passport as soon as it’s available (around 9/29-9/30) at your LYS. Early birds will also get a lovely canvas bag that’s printed with a map of the participating stores.
  • Make sure you put your name and contact information on your Passport! You’d be surprised how often we find unlabeled passports. Even better, attach your passport to your Crawl bag by punching a hole in the passport and threading yarn through it and around the handle of your bag or purse.
  • Next, think about whether you want to enter one of the grand prize drawings, which means you’ll need to visit all of the shops. Prepare for your travels by using the Crawl website, including the map and 2024 Participating Shops pages to plan your route. Many Crawlers carpool to share the fun and save on gas expenses. Also, carpooling means someone (uhh, not the driver) gets to knit or crochet along the way. ????
  • When planning your route, include rest stops. Make sure you have food and beverages to keep up your energy. FYI, most stores (Yarnivore included) will have a bathroom you can use.
  • Since every shop will be giving away daily prizes, you’ll be asked to fill out an entry form. Crawlers often use preprinted labels with their name, contact information, and home store (e.g., Yarnivore). The home store is important if you win a prize because the stores will send prizes to the store specified.
  • Each store will stamp your passport, tell you about their featured brand and give out their Crawl patterns and store pin.
  • When you’ve finished your Crawl, turn in your passport at any participating store. This will be your entry to any grand prize drawings, depending on eligibility.

Most importantly, have fun! These 10 days are some of the most yarn fun on the calendar!

If you plan on Crawling, we recommend you take a minute to look at your stash and think about your budget. Sure, Crawlers often see fun things to splurge on, but they also have an idea of yarns and tools that they already own and how much they feel comfortable spending. Some Crawlers use envelopes to store the cash they may want to spend at each store. If they decide to spend more in one shop, they can decide whether to pull that amount from another store or to go over their budget.
