Working on UFOs

There’s something exciting about starting a project, right? Finishing one is also satisfying. The middle of a project? Not particularly rewarding for some projects. This is one reason many stitchers have unfinished objects (aka UFOs). Other reasons include being confused about what to do next, forgetting where you put the UFO, not having the right yarn, being too busy, etc. If you’re feeling guilty about your UFOs, what do you do? We have ideas!

  1. Cathy suggests you start by gathering your UFOs, including the pattern and any unused yarn. You may want to start this gradually, especially for stitchers who tuck UFOs into various closets or drawers.
  2. If you have more than one UFO, put each project in a separate bag, then decide which is most important to finish first.
  3. It can be overwhelming to see a pile of UFOs, right? Work on them one at a time; Suzy calls this the snowball effect, because you feel more motivated every time you finish a UFO. According to Wendy, you'll feel less guilty with each one done!
  4. Once you’ve chosen your project, take time to understand why you stopped & what would be needed to finish it. If you need help, come see us or ask a friend. We sometimes run into silent obstacles. You know them, the things that get in the way of finishing an item, even when we don’t realize it.
  5. If you’re not particularly motivated to finish something, Moses suggests setting aside some time every day to work on the project. Caryn does this by either working on the project for 30 minutes or for a specific set of rows.
Good luck with clearing out your UFOs!

You may decide that you don’t want to finish a project. If this is so, Wendy says to put it in time-out for a few days, then confirm whether you want to discard the project. Frog it & either repurpose the yarn or threads, put them back in your stash, or donate them. You’ll feel better having moved forward in any direction!
