What does it mean when a pattern says “any yarn is suitable”, as in the Easter Flower Square? The designer is saying that you can use any thickness yarn as long as you use a needle or hook that gives you the fabric density needed (this is subjective, think of it as you’ll-know-it-when-you-see-it).

For example, the Easter Flower square was written for DK (#3) weight & a US G (4.0mm) hook. Since a US G is on the small side for this weight, the designer is indicating that the fabric should be somewhat dense. So, if you want to use Worsted (#4) yarn, which typically uses I-K (5.5 – 6.5mm), you might use an H (5.0mm). As always, test your gauge because looser or tighter stitchers may need to use a different size!
