LYS Day Celebrates Our Love of Stitching!

Local yarn stores (LYS) offer supplies & instruction, plus act as a social hub for the fiber community. However, LYS are a relatively recent concept. For most of the 20th century, department stores were the place to get yarn because they had needlework departments. Successful needlework departments featured instruction & support, plus they acted as a social hub, just like today’s LYS. In 1955, a department store employee said, "you’ve got to really like your job", but y'all have heard us say that we love what we do!

This Saturday, April 26, is LYS Day! We’re celebrating our collective (meaning all y’all’s) creativity, craftsmanship, & community. It’s a day dedicated to the small businesses that bring fiber enthusiasts together, offering unique yarns, expert advice, & a welcoming space to learn and share. Whether you’re a knitter, crocheter or other kind of stitcher, a beginner or expert, LYS Day is your chance to connect with others who share your love of yarn.

We want to thank y’all for your support, so come see us on LYS Day. We’ll have a variety of giveaways, plus hometown dyer Bad Frog Yarn will be with us. Watch our social media (@YarnivoreSA on FB/Insta) for details on our giveaways!

Hand-dyed yarn is usually made in small batches by indie dyers (like Bad Frog Yarn!). Even if the yarn is made of superwash wool (often considered machine washable), we recommend you hand wash your finished item. Why? Hand-dyed yarn is often made from premium fiber, so it can be more delicate than mass manufactured yarns. Machine washing typically includes agitation and spinning, which can stretch or abrade the fiber. Handwashing in a bowl/pot/sink with cool water & rinseless wool wash will help you ensure your project stays beautiful!
