April Tech Talk: Sweater Types

Many, many thanks for supporting us on LYS Day! We were thrilled by the joyful vibe (we even heard a new customer tell someone she'd found "paradise"), we hope y'all had as much fun as we did behind the counter!

Now, onto this months's tech talk: Sweaters come in different shapes & construction. They can be boxy (loose) or fitted (following body contours), worked seamless or in pieces (seamed). All can be made up as a pullover or as a cardigan and most can be crocheted or knitted. Here are 4 main styles:

Drop Shoulder

  • Little to no shaping, described as boxy, casual or relaxed fit because it’s essentially a rectangle from hip to shoulder; seams between body & shoulder are outside/off the shoulder. Usually worked bottom up, in pieces.

Raglan

  • Relaxed fit, with shaping at the shoulders/armhole having 4 lines, running from the neckline to armhole. Typically worked in one piece, top down but sometimes in pieces & bottom up.

Circular yoke

  • Historically boxy fit but flattering to many when fitted. Named for circular portion (neck/shoulders shaping), often using colorwork. Usually knit in one piece, top down.

Set-in Sleeve

  • Shaped for a fitted, tailored look. Typically worked in pieces & seamed but body is sometimes worked without seams.

Want to learn how to make a sweater? We recommend starting with a top down raglan or drop shoulder sweater. These require no to little shaping & can be tried on as you go. If you want expert help, we recommend Wendy for classes/lessons.

If you’re trying to figure out what size sweater to make, some instructions ask you to measure the wearer (yourself or whoever your making the sweater for. However, Wendy says you should also measure a sweater that you know is a good fit for the wearer: lay it flat on a table or bed, measure it across the body at the armpits, waist & hem, then double each of these measurements (e.g., if the sweater is 22” at the armpit, then it’s 44” around). For more detailed information, check out Brooklyn Tweed’s Selecting a Sweater Size

Moses also reminds y'all to swatch when making sweaters! This is especially important for fitted garments.
