Express Yourself with a Bag!

Everyone loves a good bag & making it yourself is a great way to express yourself. Need more reasons to make a bag? They’re relatively small projects where you can practice a new skill & their small size is perfect for scrap yarn! Plus, you can easily substitute different yarn thickness (just remember to use the needle/hook size that gives you appropriate gauge). Finally, a handmade bag is the ultimate reusable gift wrap. Here are some bag pattern ideas, many of them free!

clip art of a clear mason jar with three balls of yarn inside, one red, one green, one purple. The label on the jar reads Tip JarThe Tip Jar: Center Starts

Many bag patterns are center start, meaning they start in the center & are worked outward. These can be a bit fiddly, especially for beginners.  Crocheting them is simpler than knitting & some designers make knit patterns even harder. If you’ve run across instructions that say something like, “cast on 8 stitches & arrange 2 stitches on each of 4 double point needles” you’ll see what we mean. Controlling four needles with only a handful of stitches is pretty frustrating. Instead, we recommend you spread the stitches on two needles until you complete a few rows. The more stitches you add, the easier it will be to work with four needles.
