We're Making History: Each One, Teach One!

Fiber arts have been around for centuries; these crafts are an expression of our culture & support our social ties to each other (step into Yarnivore & you’ll feel the sense of community!). It’s important that we not only understand craft history but also realize that we’re creating history for future generations of stitchers.

What does it mean to create history? First, understanding the craft enough to satisfy your curiosity means that you’re carrying traditional techniques forward. This doesn’t have to be fancy, either; learning basic stitches can be enough. For those who want to know more, use your curiosity to help you explore. Second, don’t be shy about stitching in public. The more others see us stitching, the greater the chance of us sparking someone’s interest in crafting. Third, if you’re able to, teach others! Many of us learned from informal teachers (e.g., family members), so you don’t need to be an “expert”. Sure, teaching is a skill unto itself, but there are numerous resources online to help you (e.g., the Craft Yarn Council’s Crochet Teaching Guide).

Shop News - Hook Minders!Loop & Bee Hook Minders in various colors

Most crocheters put their hooks away when they pause their work. When they're ready to return to their work, they get their hook out again. But, how many of us have forgotten which hook size they were using? (Meeeeeee!) If this is you, too, Loop & Bee Hook Minders are handy tools! Each of them comes with a locking stitch marker that you use to identify the hook size, then attach to your work. We also have hook minders from Ella, a local artist!

Many beginners are excited to make something <jazz hands>. However, teaching others to stitch works best when we focus on the basics first. Why? Making something (cue those jazz hands again) before knowing how to stitch makes the learning process harder. Every stitcher wants to make something beautiful or useful (or both), but learning is messy; thinking you're going to make something special adds more pressure. We think it’s best to start small. For crochet & knitting, use a light, solid colored, medium (#4/worsted) weight yarn. We recommend a wool or acrylic yarn, something that is not too smooth, which can be frustratingly slippery. For needlepoint or cross stitch, we recommend a simple design with few details in a kit because most kits will have everything you need to get started.
