Splish Splash!
Splish Splash, Give Em a Bath!
A common question about a particular yarn is how to care for it. The good news is that mostmakers will tell you on the label & many use laundry symbols. But what do those tiny images mean?? Fortunately, we can decode them for you with a little help from the interwebs.
Laundry symbols follow an international standard & they fall into five categories: washing (tub of water), drying (square), bleaching (triangle), ironing (iron), & dry cleaning (circle). Each symbol has 5-12 variations to give you details. For example, the washing symbols show hand wash (hand in the tub), machine settings, or water temperature limits. Only the symbol with the hand indicates hand washing. The versions with the water temperature indicate machine washing. (Note: some sources organize symbols differently, but they still include the major methods.)
For most yarns, the maker will only include the washing & drying symbols because it’s very unusual to bleach, iron or dry clean a handmade garment. If you’re in the store, each of our shelf labels has the maker’s care recommendation; our website also has care information in each yarn’s production description. Want to know more or want to print a list of common laundry/care symbols? Check out GINETEX standards, Wikipedia’s Laundry Symbol page or Tide’s Your Guide to Decoding Laundry Symbols.
