Tis the BUYING Season!Various yarns during a sales meeting

While y’all are thinking of summer fun, we’re working on fall! It’s buying season again, where wemeet with vendors to see what’s new & to catch up on the business side of the industry. While it will be a month or two before the new yarns show up in the store, we thought we’d share what goes on behind the scenes.

Various yarns during a sales meetingSome vendors have sales reps who visit with us. Because it’s easier for us to decide which yarns to carry if we can see & touch the yarn, we tend to carry yarn from these vendors. However, we alsodo our best to consider yarns even if there isn’t a sales rep.

When we’re deciding whether to carry a yarn, we consider fiber, color, price & what yarns we already carry. How does it feel? Does the yarn have enough colors? Does the price seem like a good value? Does it compete with a yarn we already carry or does it complement what we have? We may fall in love with a new yarn, but we may also decide not to buy it if one of these factors doesn’t work for us.

Once we’ve decided to buy the yarn, including picking the colors, we build the product in our point of sale (POS) & send our order to the vendor. We'll let y'all know when the new yarns start arriving!

Speaking of fall, it will be here sooner than we all think (or not soon enough if you’re already tired of the heat). Either way, it's time to plan your holiday gifts! Yes, it feels like we have oodles of time, but time flies & stitching is more fun when we’re not on a deadline.

As you plan, decide how much time you're willing to put into each gift. Fingerless mitts (about 50-100g of yarn), hats (about 100g of yarn) & scarves (about 200g of yarn) take the least time. Socks (only 100g of yarn, but usually fingering & lots of stitches), sweaters (800g +), & blankets (1000g+) will take more time. Save yourself some stress & start those bigger projects now!
